CD ‘Istanbul Improv Sessions May 4th’

Mark Lotz / Islak Köpek

Istanbul Improv Session May 4th

In May 2010, Mark Alban Lotz recorded and performed with leading figures of Istanbul’s free improvisation scene, resulting in two albums. This album showcases a mix of ensemble improvisations, as well as duets and trios featuring members of Islak Köpek alongside Lotz. Liner notes are provided by Kevin Whitehead. The companion CD, Istanbul Improv Sessions May 5th, highlights an ensemble initiated by guitarist Umut Çağlar.

“The capacity of Lotz coming directly to the essence in all the different settings really takes you by suprise. This is free music in its most universal variation.” (Vrij Nederland, The Netherlands)

“Ça grouille, ça bouille, ça vit.” (This music is slithering and shaking with life.)” (Monsieur Delire, François Couture, Canada)

“Listening you become aware that some substantial music is being made here.” (Tim Sprangers, Jazzscene, Jazz International Rotterdam, The Netherlands)
