About Mark Lotz
Mark Lotz is a flutist, composer, and improviser whose work unfolds at the intersection of jazz, contemporary music, and global traditions. Praised by Los Angeles Jazz Scene Magazine as “one of the world’s top jazz flute players,” he has built an international practice driven by curiosity and exploration.
His music moves between solo performance, free improvisation, cinematic jazz, and projects rooted in Afro-Cuban religious music, West African Fula traditions, Turkish free improvisation, and Indian-influenced forms. Lotz’s collaborations frequently extend beyond music, intersecting with theater, film, dance, performance art, and visual arts.
Lotz has appeared on over 70 recordings and released 23 albums as a leader, recorded in Africa, the Caribean, the Orient, Europe and Asia. Additionally, featured on over 70 albums recorded among others in India, Senegal and Turkey. His debut Puasong Daffriek (1994) drew early attention for its unconventional concept and imagination. In 2025, he founded his own label, Sonic Squid Music.
Lotz has worked with artists such as a.o. Don Byron, Chris Potter, David Tronzo, Miguel ‘Anga’ Diaz, Najma Akthar, Anatol Steffanet, Eddy Martinez, Han Bennink, Ernst Reijseger, theater director Erik de Vroedt, or Istanbul’s genre-defying ensemble Islak Köpek.
Lotz maintains an intense international schedule as a soloist, bandleader, composer, producer, and educator. Alongside touring, he initiates festivals and concert series and teaches at the Utrecht and Rotterdam Conservatories.
Press responses have described his work as uncompromising and driven. All About Jazz wrote that “Mark Alban Lotz is bringing sexy back into jazz,” the French CultureJazz called him a “This is a musician who makes no compromises,” and Austrian’s Concerto Magazine noted, “One of the most outstanding virtuosos on the flute.””
His most recent release, Freshta (Berthold/Zennez Records), dedicated to the memory of Afghan woman’s rights activist Freshta Kohistani, approaches music as a tool for reflection and change — reaffirming Lotz’s position as a contemporary jazz soloist and composer who transcends borders while celebrating life through music.
