Epiphyllum
A Nocturnal Bloom Of Sound
Epiphyllum
Mark Lotz • alto flute, game calls, fx, laptop/ableton, controllers
A solo performative sound work built around a single premise: some things reveal themselves only once, in the dark, and then vanish.
Inspired by a cactus that blooms once a year, after midnight, for a single night, alto flute and live electronics — granular textures, generative delays, real-time processing — build a slow, immersive nocturnal ecosystem live on stage. Natural flute resonances merge with the sounds of nocturnal animals and plants, blurring the line between composed and emergent, human breath and machine memory. The piece treats the performance space itself as a living organism: sound behaves like night-blooming flora, appearing and dissolving in real time, weaving minimalistic melody, harmony, and texture into a meditative, immersive atmosphere.
A solo performance by a musician described as a “Sound Architect of a Different Kind” (Jazz Magazine Portugal). This project saw a little try-out at the De Nacht van Ontdekkingen in the stunning setting of the Hortus Botanicus, Leiden—a perfect venue for this nocturnal-inspired music. The first concerts are planned for 2027.
