Epiphyllum
A Nocturnal Bloom Of Sound
Epiphyllum
Mark Lotz • alto flute, game calls, fx, laptop/ableton, controllers
Experience slow ambient music on alto flute, woven with lush electronic soundscapes. Inspired by the rare beauty of a cactus that blooms only once—and only at night—this performance invites you into a serene sonic universe. Combining natural flute resonances with sounds of the night with nocturnal animals, plants etc, this music evokes vivid imagery and teases the imagination. Granular textures, pitched delays, reverbs, and generative electronic sounds blend with live looping and sound processing. It strikes a balance between abstraction and structure, weaving minimalistic melody, harmony, and textures into an elegant, cohesive flow to create a meditative and immersive atmosphere.
A solo performance by a musician described as a “Sound Architect of a Different Kind” (Jazz Magazine Portugal). This project debuted at De Nacht van Ontdekkingen in the stunning setting of the Hortus Botanicus, Leiden—a perfect venue for this nocturnal-inspired music.
