A unique collaboration at the crossroads of music and visual arts, where two artistic worlds merged seamlessly.
Flutist Mark Lotz and visual artist Michiel van Bakel shared a deep curiosity for pushing boundaries, exploring the interplay between sound and image with a natural synergy. Their collaboration was more than just music and film—it was a total experience, where audio and visuals fit together like a glove, reinforcing and amplifying each other’s impact.
Van Bakel’s work crafted poetic realities, reflecting the tension between humanity, technology, and time, while Lotz’s flutes and electronics provided an emotional counterpart, deepening the connection between viewer and image. The result was an immersive dialogue where serene melodies and mechanical movement interacted, drawing the audience into a world beyond the ordinary.
Their performance at the UJazz Festival 2018 was a huge success. The audience lost itself in the hypnotic blend of sound and visuals, fully absorbed in the experience.

Michiel van Bakel studied astronomy, photography (Psychopolis; Frans Zwartjes) and psychology for several years before he chose for autonomous visual art, at art school. Van Bakel expresses himself through film and videos, sculpture and installations.
“When I look around, I see a lot of technology that aims to constrain reality in predictability, by categorizing and automating. I want to use technology to evoke wonder and transcend reality and predictability.
In the same manner as a sculptor gives his material form through interventions in 3d space, I construct my videos in time. Recurring themes are examining human perception, experiencing time, disorientation and instability. ”
