Mark Lotz Trio

Mark Alban Lotz – flutes, fx
Zack Lober – bass
Jamie Peet – drums

Combining a classic jazz setup with the unconventional voice of the flute, this ensemble stands out for its bold sound. Fronted by flautist Mark Lotz, the trio features two celebrated musicians making waves in the Dutch jazz scene: drummer Jamie Peet and NYC veteran double bassist Zack Lober. Together, they push the boundaries of modern jazz, blending intricate improvisation with an exploratory spirit.

The flute is rarely heard in such robust, dynamic settings, giving this trio an intriguing position in contemporary jazz. Lotz’s consistently challenging approach as an improviser shatters preconceptions about the flute, proving its versatility and power as a jazz instrument.

Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out!

The CD ‘Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out!’ is inspired by the Eight-Circuit Model of Consciousness, a philosophical and psychedelic concept developed by Dr. Timothy Leary in the 1960s. This conceptual framework serves as the foundation for the trio’s compositions and improvisations, offering a new exploration of sound and thought.

Timothy Leary (1920-1996), a prominent figure of the psychedelic 1960s was an American psychologist and writer who pioneered LSD for therapeutic use in psychiatry. He developed the “eight circuit model” of consciousness in his book “Exo-Psychology” (1977).

The ‘Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out!‘ release received glowing reviews and significant industry attention, with extensive radio play and features worldwide.

Mark Lotz

flutes, Bansuri, fx
Creative miracle and flute phenomenon (according to Kuub, NL) Mark Lotz is a prominent improviser within the international scene with a lifetime of 'out of the box' genre-binding productions. These span an arc from free improvised music from Istanbul to interpretations of Afro Cuban religious music. Lotz transports his fascinating instrument to modern jazz music. He possesses a unique personal language that combines the aesthetics and techniques of contemporary classical music with the virility of jazz. Even when stripped down to the essence, Lotz has a joyful catchiness. A soloist who casually shatters the stereotypes surrounding the flute. Lotz has worked with Chris Potter, Don Byron, David Tronzo, Najma Akthar, Miguel Anga Diaz, Carlos Zingaro, Najma Akthar, Mathew Ostrowski, Thomas Strønen or Dutch artists such as Giovanca, Jesse Van Ruller, Wouter Hamel, Zuco 103, Han Bennink or Ernst Reijseger.
