Pendant La Nuit was a collaboration between writer and director Eric de Vroedt (libretto, direction) and Mark Lotz (composer) for the Soapera series.
The CD Pendant La Nuit featuring most of the music from the Soapera was released in 2014 on the LopLop label and rereleased by Sonic Squid Music in 2025
Performances
The production was initiated by Theater Lantaren Venster in Rotterdam in June 2004 as part of their music theater series Soapera. It was followed by an extensive tour at the circus/theater festival De Parade. A revival took place in 2005.

Short Summary of the Plot
The story followed a couple (played by Annelies Herft and Dick van den Toorn) as they reflected on their relationship over the course of a single night. Their rapid-fire dialogue and emotional exchanges built toward a surprising ending. Meanwhile, Lotz Of Music, performing as a Finnish jazz band, jammed, drank, read, and smoked (including pot—after all, this was the Netherlands) in their living room—without saying a single word.
Press on Pendant La Nuit
Het Parool (The Netherlands)
“And suddenly you find a masterpiece on the Parade: Pendant La Nuit! Music theater of the highest level.”
NRC Handelsblad (The Netherlands)
“Pendant La Nuit was a dramatic, swinging, acid-tongued magic bonbon.”
Utrechts Nieuwsblad (The Netherlands)
“Full of absurd side leaps and sharp dialogues, with a distinctive role for the jazz orchestra under Mark Lotz. The playing felt remarkably freewheeling, natural, and effortless.”
Rotterdams Dagblad
“Finger-snapping, head-banging djazzz.”
